Start by comparing the shower with other outlets
A weak shower can be caused by the shower itself or by the water system feeding it. Compare nearby hot and cold taps. If they are also poor, the problem is unlikely to be confined to the shower head. If taps are strong but the shower is weak, look towards the hose, head, filters, control valve or local pipework. Notice whether the flow has always been disappointing or has suddenly changed. A long-standing design limitation needs a different solution from a new blockage or failed component.
The type of hot-water system matters
A gravity-fed shower supplied from a loft tank and cylinder may naturally have lower pressure than a mains-fed combi or unvented system. Some showers are designed to work with low pressure, while others expect a stronger supply. Fitting a different head cannot create pressure that the system does not have. Equally, adding a pump is not automatically appropriate for every arrangement. Before choosing equipment, establish where the hot and cold supplies come from and what pressure or head is actually available.
Scale and debris can restrict the shower locally
Shower heads, hoses and small inlet filters can collect limescale or grit. If the pressure has fallen gradually, removing and cleaning the head may reveal whether it is the main restriction. A kinked hose can also reduce flow. Thermostatic valves sometimes contain filters or non-return components that clog after work on the water supply. If one temperature side is much weaker than the other, that points to a local restriction rather than a general pressure problem.
Temperature behaviour gives another clue
A shower that becomes weak only when set hot may have a restriction in the hot supply or the shower cartridge. If both hot and cold are equally poor, the shared outlet or overall supply deserves more attention. On a combi boiler, very high flow demand can affect temperature, but a genuinely weak stream is not solved by turning the boiler temperature up. Record whether the pressure changes when another tap or toilet is used elsewhere in the house. That can reveal limited supply capacity.
A plumber should measure before recommending a pump
Before spending money on boosting equipment, ask for the available pressure and flow to be checked. A restriction at a valve, blocked filter or undersized pipe may be fixable without adding a pump. Mains supplies also have rules about how water can be boosted, and some pumps are designed only for stored water. The right solution may be as simple as cleaning a filter or as involved as changing the shower supply arrangement. Measurement prevents an expensive cure being chosen for the wrong fault.
How to describe the problem clearly
Tell the plumber whether the shower is electric or mixer, whether it is upstairs or downstairs and what type of boiler or cylinder serves the property. Explain whether the weakness affects hot, cold or both, and whether nearby taps are normal. Mention any recent bathroom work or changes to the water system. A short video of the shower running can be useful, but the system details are more important than the visual appearance of the stream when deciding what should be tested.
Be wary of assuming a new shower will solve poor supply
Replacing the visible shower controls can be tempting when the flow is disappointing, but a new valve cannot overcome a weak or unsuitable supply. If the existing shower has always been poor, ask what flow and pressure are available before choosing replacement equipment. A gravity-fed system may need a shower designed for that arrangement, while a mains-fed system with a local restriction may simply need the restriction removed. If a pump is suggested, ask what water source it will draw from and whether the pipework and storage are suitable. Pumps can transform the right system and create new problems on the wrong one. A good quotation should therefore explain the cause of the weak flow and the expected improvement, not just list a more expensive shower unit.
